How the calculation works
- Gross salary = CTC minus the employer's PF and gratuity, if your CTC includes them.
- Your PF (12% of basic, or of ₹15,000 a month if capped) and professional tax come out of gross salary.
- Taxable income = gross salary minus the standard deduction (₹75,000 new, ₹50,000 old). The old regime also deducts professional tax, 80C (with your PF) and other deductions.
- Income tax follows the slabs, less the Section 87A rebate, plus surcharge above ₹50 lakh and 4% health and education cess.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the in-hand salary for a ₹5 lakh CTC?
About ₹37,467 a month under the new tax regime for FY 2026-27, assuming basic pay is 40% of CTC, PF of 12% of basic from you and your employer, and ₹2,400 a year of professional tax. No income tax is due at this salary.
What is the in-hand salary for a ₹10 lakh CTC?
About ₹75,133 a month under the new regime and ₹67,956 under the old regime without other deductions, on the same assumptions.
Is a salary of ₹12 lakh tax-free in FY 2026-27?
Under the new regime, taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays no income tax because of the Section 87A rebate. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried people, a gross salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no income tax. Just above that limit, marginal relief caps the tax at the income over ₹12 lakh.
What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?
CTC (cost to company) is everything your employer spends on you in a year, including its own PF contribution and sometimes gratuity. In-hand salary is what reaches your bank account after your PF contribution, professional tax and income tax are deducted.
Should I choose the new or the old tax regime?
The new regime has lower slab rates and a ₹75,000 standard deduction but allows almost no other deductions. The old regime has higher rates but lets you deduct 80C investments (up to ₹1,50,000 including your PF), health insurance, HRA and home-loan interest. Enter your deductions in the calculator to see which leaves you more each month.
